A Lesson In Teamwork

Teamwork is a great lesson to learn at an early age. Working in a team environment is something that people should do at least once in their life, since it helps a person to work in collaboration with others. A great way for young kids to discover how important teamwork is, and the benefits it can offer, is for them to participate in team sports.

Playing Little League baseball is one of the greatest memories of my life. I wasn’t the best player on the team, and my team didn’t win the championship every year, but I was able to learn important aspects of teamwork while making friends in the process. When you go into the season as a Little Leaguer, the excitement that it brings is unlike anything you have ever experienced before. When you’re a young kid, everything in life at that point is extremely new and exciting.

One of the best things I got out of playing organized sports was the bonding that took place along the way. I remember playing my last high-school baseball game during my senior year. Our season had ended and it had finally dawned on me that I would never play another baseball game with these great team members again.

As I looked around at my teammates, I realized that I had been playing baseball with some of these guys since I was 10 or 11 years old. I had developed a relationship with these guys that was based on a team goal and that was to succeed and win. But now, the whole winning aspect was not as important as when we were playing the game. Along the way, I had learned to appreciate my team members and how we had all worked together to succeed.

Playing sports at a young age can also teach you how to win or lose with dignity. Many people may think, how do you learn how to lose? Sports teaches kids how to become comfortable with defeat and how to deal with it. Ultimately, it also teaches kids how to handle defeat in any other aspect of life. If you can come to terms with defeat and always move on to eventual success, that truly makes you a winner.
